Across three days in early April 2012, Ohio State became a fast-paced, minute-to-minute, surge of activism, with potential for longevity, characterized by the message “stand your ground”. Time for Action Twenty four hours after a candlelight vigil for social justice, Hoodies and Headscarves, on Wed. April 4 at 7pm, Ohio State (OSU) students began organizing to bring three minimum demands to the Board of Trustees regarding hate crimes and diversity, Thurs. April 5 at 7pm.

Ohio State student activists took a page out of the Occupy playbook when they “mic checked” a panel discussion on shale drilling hosted by the the Subsurface Energy Research Center (SERC) at the Ohio Union on November 18th. The panel, which was made up of several industry experts, a state official and an environmental advocate, was intended to provide information on the oil and gas industry’s new, and extensive, horizontal hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) initiatives in Ohio. Approximately 10 minutes into the event, over thirty-five students from OSU and around the state interrupted state geologist Larry Wickstrom to deliver a message of their own to an audience of students, faculty, and industry professionals. What Kind of Innovation?

So if you haven’t noticed, capitalism produces a whole lot of stuff.  Capitalists are constantly coming up with new ways to make stuff faster, new ways to make stuff cheaper, with new methods of making stuff, and even new industries to make different stuff.  A famous economist dude named Joseph Schumpeter even came up with a concept called “creative destruction” where new ways of making stuff are so much better than old ways of making stuff, that they totally wipe them out.  It’s a pretty badass name, and it gets to the heart of how we think of “innovation” in our society.
