Students Host Concert, Raise Funds to Fight Human Trafficking

Despite many students being busy with midterm exams, over 100 people gathered at the Union on Thursday evening for a fundraiser concert to fight against human trafficking. The two-hour event was headlined by Tim Be Told, a “pop, rock and a little bit of soul” band, in the words of its guitarist Andrew Chae. Tim Be Told hails from Charlottesville, Virginia, but has played charity shows in Columbus twice before since its inception in 2006, Chae said.

Music really throws a lot of people for a loop when they try to write about it. Sites like Pitchfork exist to judge, categorize, and rank music, which rarely ends up well, especially given their excruciating rating scale (anybody wanna explain the difference between a 7.2 and a 7.3?) Album blogs (preferably with free downloads) often do music a bit more justice.  But for me, there are two kinds of album bloggers. Those that try to figure out what you like, and those that tell you what they like.  The latter are far more interesting.  If you’re interested in the hippest artists or if want to know which Zola Jesus 7-inch to play at the end of a date, you can just read pitchfork, or some other zine concerned with being cool, trendy, and the first to know. The...

Singing Truth to Power

November 14, 2011
By

Something astonishing happened at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) banquet on Nov. 12th.  In front of President Obama, and 18 other heads of state, Hawaii-native Makana, strayed from his scripted performance of instrumental music. He played his new song “we are the many”, and his guitar tech caught footage of it on his camera phone.  Then he played different variations of it for 45 MINUTES!   “I found it odd that I was afraid to do it at first. I found that disturbing, that’s kind of why I did it.  I didn’t like the idea of being afraid to sing a song I created.  I’ve never in my life been afraid to sing anything.  If that’s what we’ve come to in the world, where we’re afraid to say certain things in the company of certain people–I think that’s a...

From “No Scrubs” to “Shittin on ‘Em”

What the hell Happened to Female Power in RnB? Remember when we used to be “Independent Women (Destiny’s Child)” and didn’t settle for “scrubs” (TLC)? Remember when women used to espouse notions of strength and self-pride, even in genres like country and pop? To be fair, the overwhelming theme in the music industry (males and females included) is misogynist and subordinates women to disposable objects that are always DTF; however, there have been a hand full of artists and songs past and present that have attempted to challenge these messages.

Music – roeVy at Newport

Music – roeVy at Newport

The Venue: The Newport may be the longest continuously-running rock club in America, but I feel like the building’s physical existence was jeopardized Saturday night by the colossal bass, which pounded basically nonstop for four straight hours. Of course, no one in the building at the time seemed to care that the walls were shaking, and everyone in the room was jumping right along with enough force to destroy an aircraft carrier. Hopefully management called a structural engineer out the next morning to check on things, but maybe the walls are Kevlar-reinforced or something and there’s no need to worry. The roeVy show was so intense, this was the best shot I could get. Photo by CJ Jones. 10/29/11 In case you’re unfamiliar with the local electro/techno scene, the humbly-named “DEMONS HALLOWEEN PARTY” was the place to be on...

Music – Night at Circus

October 27, 2011

Bear with me, live music connoisseurs, I’m not exactly sure about the fancy conventions of show reviews. Everyone else: fuck that noise, I’m just gonna tell you what I think! Circus is not a place I often go, not because I don’t like the place, but because it’s not particularly easy for me to get to, and there are other great venues much closer to where I live – such as Kobo, Rumba Cafe, and Dick’s Den, among others.  But, on Oct. 14 the lineup at Circus was just too good for me to pass up. Three local bands played high-energy shows to a good-sized crowd and it was a fun night of rocking out. The Venue: Circus is a dance hall-concert venue located at 1227 North High Street (near the corner of High and 5th avenue). Cover for live shows and DJ’s...
