“Take Back The Night” Event to Demand Change to Rape Culture

May 16, 2012
By

Take Back the Night is organized each year for a myriad of important reasons, each layered with issues of women’s rights, student safety, female empowerment and institutional inefficiencies that do little to assist victims of sexual assault. As is made clear by the event’s title, it should be safe for any citizen, regardless of gender identification, to walk, socialize and live their lives without a persistent fear of violence. It serves as not only an atmosphere of support and empowerment for survivors of sexual violence but also a place for educational discourse for those not directly affected by this violence.

Editor’s Note: The Pulse is reporting the accounts of students that have experienced situations of hate on or off-campus. An Ohio State student* received what she perceived to be a “hate email” on April 28 around 1pm. The email list contained approximately 400 OSU email accounts. The student noticed that almost all of the emails were sent to people with traditionally German last names, she said, “This combined with the content of the email led me to believe that the email was unsolicited by all the receivers, only sent to students because of their assumed ethnicity.”

Students Gather to Educate, Push for University Changes

"Oppression and Resistance: Student Power at OSU" spoke to the climate of undeniable unrest on campus. Students are not interested in symbolic gestures or superficial displays of diversity; the student body is demanding foundational changes in order to garner fundamental and tangible improvements at The Ohio State University. When the group of students left Bricker Hall chanting, “we’ll be back, we’ll be back”, I believe they meant it.

“Stepp”ing on toes: USG 2012 takes a turn for the worse

This election season might be about over, but it’s worth continuing the conversation about how some of our current collegiate politicians truly reflect the toxic political scene in Washington. For example, I seriously begin to worry when USG presidential candidates start making rash allegations about sexual assault. Late Sunday I received an email featuring a leaked early campaign platform sent from current presidential candidate Taylor Stepp, which claim we should be “publicizing fraternities that constantly roofie drinks” - specifically, “Phi Si” - to women on campus.

Time for Action Twenty four hours after a candlelight vigil for social justice, Hoodies and Headscarves, on Wed. USG Elections: 2 weeks, 4 teams, and lots of indecision

April 8, 2012
By

The Pulse sat down with Undergraduate Student Government (USG) presidential and vice-presidential candidates, who are closing in on the second week of campaigning. Elections are Thursday and Friday, April 12th and 13th, so we decided to ask the candidates to tell the students what they really think about tuition and fees, privatization of university assets, and on-campus hate speech – three issues pivotal to students that are sometimes less emphasized than other hot-button issues.

[Live Blog] Students Fill Union Demanding Hate Crime Alert System, Pledge to Sit-in

Several dozen black students and their allies have filled the ground floor of the student union, demanding that the university implement a hate crime alert system. The students have claimed they will not leave until the inaugural hate crime alert email or text is sent out, in response to yesterday’s and this morning’s racist graffiti. Hale Hall was vandalized yesterday, and a mural of Barack Obama at 12th and 4th was vandalized this morning. More to come as this story develops. UPDATE 12:30: A student just announced that a campus police representative is coming to the union to negotiate what this hate crime alert would contain. UPDATE 12:35: Students have begun breaking off into groups to better engage local and national media, as well as coordinate social media outreach. UPDATE 12:55: Pizza has arrived for the students sitting-in. 1:05...
