Teach-In on Education: Students Talk Debt and Power

Students of Occupy Ohio State held a teach-in on education, Tuesday Feb. 28. The event centered on various speakers covering topics involving student power or lack of power and increasing corporate influence at Ohio State. The floor was opened up for discussion after each speaker.   “Ready to do stuff? It’s time to take on an active role,” said fourth year Molly Shack in the introductory remarks.

3 Dead in Ohio And There’s Going to Be More, Because There’s Always Been More, But There Doesn’t Have to Be

Hey there my precious Pulsars, I had this whole beautiful note of inspiring solipsism entitled “Why I Occupy” planned for yesterday as part of a lead-up to (#)M1 Actions, but then I just had to open up Gawker and discover that this happened. Don’t they say that the worst news always comes from Ohio or Florida? I’m not entirely sure if what I’m about to write is appropriate, given that the incident happened only this morning. Though I love and care about Ohio, I also understand that I have the luxury of 2,500 miles of distance to think more analytically about what happened. If you have any personal ties, or good friends with personal ties, to Chardon or Chardon High School, you may want to stop reading now because I imagine it’s been kind of a raw 24 hours...

Free Fadi Quran

Yo Pulse-pounders, I try to avoid bringing up the “S word” around here partially out of respect for the Ohio State activist community and partially because it really doesn’t matter at all where I or anyone else went to school. But, I wanted to draw attention to the situation of Fadi Quran, a Palestinian rights activist and Stanford graduate who was arrested yesterday in the West Bank and is currently being detained. I do not know him personally (though the fact that I don’t makes me wonder what I did with my education there), but we do have 24 friends mutual friends on Facebook. The story of his arrest is pretty terrible but it is by no means the worst to come out of the West Bank and Gaza. I don’t think the Israeli police force entirely realizes what...

OSU Students Flock to Anti-Sweatshop Conference

On February 17, twenty-three Ohio State students traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for a weekend conference with over 300 United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) members from across the country. The majority of the conference took place on University of Wisconsin Madison’s campus, but students also marched to the Capitol on the 17th to protest the anti-union Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill passed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker last year.

Daily Truth Dialogue: The War on Drugs – Part 2

Nixons-War-on-Drugs

The sun rises and sets and the wheel keeps turning. However, the wheel is very large and very slow, but one day, it will have turned enough to make a revolution. Now, back to the Daily Truth. Stuart: So back to the political drawing board. If you didn’t follow our conversation yesterday, we finished by talking about how the Nixon administration exploited the racism of white America for political gain. Stuart: Anyways, from Nixon on, any president who wasn’t “tough on crime” AKA — ready to fill up the penitentiaries and scale up the military occupation of urban black communities in response to non-violent crime — was seen as an unequivocal weakling in the eyes of the white American electorate. This includes Clinton, who, according to several rumors, even had a black friend, But what happened under Reagan is...

Environmentally Speaking … Explaining the Exceptionally Warm Winter

Has anyone else noticed the utter lack of cold and snow? Yes, I’m aware I’m in the tropics, but I’m talking about Ohio. Every time I get a phone call from Ohio there’s a comment about how warm it is. Of course, if you’re reading this post, you’ve probably already attributed the anomalous warmth to climate change, and you’d be correct – partially and indirectly, at least. So what’s going on? First, there’s La Niña. La Niña occurs when trade winds push warm Pacific waters westward toward Australia and Asia, exposing cooler waters (by about 5°C) in the East. When waters are cooler, the vapor pressure above the waters decreases, leading to low moisture levels in the American West. The less moisture in the West, the less moisture the jet stream, which travels eastward, pushes east toward Ohio and...

Police State: Muslim Student Associations Under Surveillance

I don't use the term "police state" often, but when I do, it's because it's accurate. Over the weekend, the Associated Press revealed that the New York Police Department had been monitoring college Muslim Student Association chapters not only within NYC city limits, but across the state and across the Northeast - including at Rutgers, Yale and Columbia.
